Wednesday Style Points: A Seriously Yellow Accented Christmas Tree

Wednesday Style Points: A Seriously Yellow Accented Christmas Tree

Each year, the question begs

Style? Format? Type? Placement? Number? Real? Fake? Combo?

I like it all. Truly.

Austere Contemporary? Bring it on.

Over the top Traditional? Awesome.

Cabin Kitsch? Perfect.

This year, we were approached by ivillage & asked to send them some “beautiful Christmas Trees”

What to do?!

(Be sure to check out the feature HERE and let them know you like us! We’d love to do more with ivillage….:)

Today: Yellow

My inspiration came from yellow flowers in my blue kitchen sink (behind) & red cake plates…it was one of those mornings when the aha moment came!

Later: Our Contemporary Tree

My main home is a traditional combination of yellows & slate blue

I went on line and thought – lets see what’s out there that will fit into my existing color scheme.

What did I get back??

The White House Blue Room Tree!!!!!

Seriously? The only tree out there was this one? Time to get making a Practical Beautiful YELLOW Christmas Tree!

There was seriously NO Christmas Tree out there with Yellow. There was a lemon or two, a fruit theme, but nothing with the main body combining Yellow.

So got about doing what we do best. We custom made something.

I couldn’t find ANY ornaments of scale in Yellow. So I headed to the Dollar Store and found a prototype plastic snowflake for 99 cents. I bought every single one they had.

We then had them made to accept paint.

We dipped in lacquer quality paint (matte) that had been custom matched to a silk taffeta I have (see tree skirt)

We hung them out to dry – and then dipped again – and again – and again.

This was part of the set up. These two ginger jars reside in my front hall and are on top of an antique swedish kitchen bed (soon to be on Joss and Main!). We really wanted the color combos to fit with our everyday living.

This formed the color backbone of the tree.

In order to make it work – it was trial & error.

Since I hadn’t seen it  done before, there HAD to be a reason = truth is it’s HARD to make a Yellow Tree work. Frankly, black is easier. Much.

This was one of our First Drafts. As you can see, the colors in my Entry Hall are Yellow & Blue. We felt this needed more pop, so added the red. Though, for a client who wanted a Hanukkah Bush (or something along those lines) we may have stopped with this color combo.

We had several combinations, took photos – walked away – changed composition – walked away – took more photos….until finally I was pleased with the overall scale & volume.

I considered using these red Chippendale Style Chairs (also soon to be on Joss and Main) but opted for the lesser Blue Upholstered Chair (from Pottery Barn) which typically sits in a corner of any room in the house for reading a book. It floats the house & works in most rooms.

It is not for everybody.

But this year? As I CRAVE the traditional….it was for me.

It reminds me of a ball gown. And if I could wear one each day, I would.

The Final Tree as shown on ivillage & in our Entry Hall

And a few clients who happen to have Blue & Yellow Family Rooms are quite pleased that their trees this season actually work WITH their rooms. We had fun modifying some of the ornaments for clients: custom over scaled upholstered (WOW!). I think I will sell these next season……for now, they are under wraps as we photograph for our “A Couture Chateau Christmas” Book (2013)

Anyway – the point is, make it YOU. Don’t apologize for what you love.

Wednesday Style Points: Be Present & Don’t Panic Just Because Thanksgiving is on Thursday :)

Wednesday Style Points: Be Present & Don’t Panic Just Because Thanksgiving is on Thursday 🙂

Style = Stronghold of the Soul if you ask me

Points = Reference, Data, Markers, Milestones….

Our Style Points (good or bad) are often revealed under pressure

I used to think I had to be able to bake like this. I have let that go…am better at other things & everyone around me is relieved!

When deadlines loom, especially on the HOME front

Do we panic?

Or are we present?

Gratitude paves the way for being present

Not always easy. I like things quite perfect, thank you very much…but it’s a process!! And so this is for the custom ME as well as the custom YOU.

We have food. We have tables. We have shelter. We have breath & therefore hope.

Guess there is something You and I still need to do cause we’re still here type thing…

I am not the “pie maker” in the family! Wish I had the touch, but no crust from my kitchen will make you swoon. My father tried to teach me. “It’s all in the wrist Ann” but to no avail. Decorate the baking area IN the kitchen? A+. Bake in the baking area? C. With GRATITUDE I am PRESENT to relinquish this task. I do not PANIC trying to be something I am not.

Have a peek at two extreme “Couture Chateaus” that comfort & reassure me.

As preparations for a perfect American Thanksgiving are underway…

These places inspire me because I imagine the people who inhabit them have style points

I actually love the simplicity of these tents. There is purpose + function here. And a bit of color!

They are living the life they are meant to live – custom – couture – as they are

I have always loved stone. Longevity + Strength. Never perfect, ages beautifully.

Whether its a backpack or a manse

Just for today, be the person you are supposed to be – and let that come through in all your preparation, whether it’s something as simple as selecting cheeses & olives or as massive as cooking & decorating for 50+.

Thankful.

And next week?! ALL those Holiday Pics we’ve been taking.

For now – best. From us to you.

Wednesday Style Points: Tole Cache Pots = “LBD” of This Time of Year

Wednesday Style Points: Tole Cache Pots = “LBD” of This Time of Year

We’ve been BUSY these past few days…so I will get right to it!!

(Fact: We have been using Tole Cache Pots all week & so have our clients)

1970’s French Tole. Missed this sale on OKL, but am SURE we could find someone to fabricate something similar with our Couture Chateau “made just for you” on the underside…;)!

tole also tôle  (tl)

noun:

A lacquered or enameled metalware, usually gilded and elaborately painted.

[French tôle, sheet metal, variant of table, table, slab, from Old French, from Latin tabula, board.]

So yes….this happens to be an official waste basket, but I have been known to use these for fabulous mini evergreens around this time of year!! I mean, something this pretty should be “up”! Image linked: Pink Palazzo Tole Wastebasket, Taigan

Love it.

Why the “LBD”?

a) it lives in your home all year

b) it fits your home decor all year

c) it can be “dressed up” or “dressed down” = customized per occasion

d) it faithfully pulls through as a design staple

I mean…good enough for Brooke Astor…good enough for me…;)!

These were auctioned off by Sotheby’s from the Estate of Brooke Astor. I can see them bare like this or filled with delightful things!

Later I will show you some of the variations we have scattered throughout my home & my client’s homes. Just yesterday, we received a cell phone shot from a client hosting Thanksgiving. She used wheat. Next month am certain it will hold greens. Lovely!

We found this stack on Hound Hill Design. What I like is that you can literally shop Home Goods to Sotheby’s for the ones that fit your home. Contemporary to traditional. No excuses!

oh, and…..

e) I simply LOVE them empty. Austere. On a clear clean table or chest. Just like that perfect “LBD” it can stand alone!!

Wednesday Style Points: Details Make the Room

Wednesday Style Points: Details Make the Room

Yesterday we spent all day photographing for November Features

What kept us all day? DETAILS

a couture hem detail from Tien Chiu

How does the hem hang on a custom swivel chair with interlined plackets

Interlining comes in different weights. One of my favorite materials!

How does the hand knit throw blanket drape on an ottoman when it’s cashmere? what about cotton?

I love this site…”A community for hand spinners….”. Do you drool over the detail in hand spun yarns like I do? Swoon.

When we put rooms together, the envelope – the floor plan – of course those things matter

But what makes a room couture?

Details

Think about it. DETAILS make you – well – you.

Have a look around in your “best dressed” space at home

What do you notice? What is it that makes the space so special?

For me, it’s the custom details

The way the gilt lines a coffee table

The interlined chair skirts that look “thick”

A Silver Leaf (not pink;)! lined lamp shade

What do you notice?

I would love to know the custom details that make your spaces sing…

“Live a custom life. There is only one you.”™

Wednesday Style Points: High Point Market, The Good, The Better…The Custom. Ann’s Top Three Take-a-Ways

Wednesday Style Points: High Point Market, The Good, The Better…The Custom

Oh….I looove Market.

So many fabulous and fun vendors and talks (hello Charolotte Moss! What a woman!)

My top three take – a – ways:

The GOOD:

Manufacturers are becoming more Designer Friendly. Someone got the memo.

“We are Designer Friendly” was the VERY first thing I heard after a lovely Hello. Thank you! And Holly – the showroom is FABULOUS. I can hardly wait to find a project to use some of your pieces in.

I have been in this business a looooong time. Had the honor of starting in the manufacturing end for a very progressive thinker: Designers were of the highest order to that manufacturer and the business thrived. There was an understanding that the “Feet on the Ground” with the taste makers trickled down, not the other way around.

Fashion + Art has always understood that. Remember Cerulean Blue…

Perhaps the Fashion + Decor Theme had something to do with it.

Whatever the case, it was a lovely time to be at Market.

Truly.

Thank you. It was refreshing.

The BETTER:

I got to see my “peeps”. I learned from my “peeps”. I was happier in community with my “peeps”.

My “peeps” opened my eyes to some of the manufacturers I would never have gone to on my own. Accessory companies, upholstery companies and all sorts of lighting options. In the past, I have scheduled appointments and been very business like….well, this time…there was that (all business like) but there was “float”.

I like float. I needed float.

Charlotte Moss talked about time in her Kayak. That inspired me.

Float allowed me to enjoy a book signing (Charlotte, Rhonda, Scot, Suzanna)!

Float provided me an introduction to Quintessence. Hello Heaven. Thank you Traci Zeller.

Along for the fun with Traci Zeller as she style spotted at Stanford Furniture…how fun!

And yes, lovely and classic in person. Simply divine.

Float. Try it. New for me ;)…I think I like it…. (!)…..

The CUSTOM:

I met several manufacturers who are offering completely customized options now.

Hickory has always done this….but others are following suit. A wonderful thing as we “Live our custom lives…”

That is NEW. Trust me. It is NEW.

So – exciting stuff for the Design Industry.

Will check in when we are back in SF….& I’ve had my latte from my favorite local “custom coffee shop” ;)…my own kitchen…

Wednesday Style Points: Can I Wear a Ball Gown to the Studio Because I am an Interior Designer?

Wednesday Style Points: Can I Wear a Ball Gown to the Studio Because I am an Interior Designer?!

Anne Barge Collection 2011

Why Not?! (ok, I DO know why not…but stillllll:)

designed by Danish firm Holgaard Arkitekter, picture linked

Here’s the rub: the details on some of these couture gowns & even custom RTW are SO inspiring!

Randolph Duke 2008. I mean hello Navy & Copper!

I mean…how practical…set the scene: Couture Chateau Team Custom Designing a 30 something’s home in Florida in our Bay Area Studio…wearing Elie Saab…BOOM (!) inspiration strikes by donning Gown & voila, Design Done :)!

Elie Saab Haute Couture Spring 2012

All right…maybe custom gowns don’t give us super powers, but I KNOW capes do ;)….

Style Points: I see a RTW or Couture Collection  and swoon over how that can translate into Custom Interior Design

In 2010, Lee Jofa auctioned custom skirts designed by Oscar de la Renta made out of the designer’s line of home fabrics.

I love the inspiration highway between the two. It literally is the way to “wear it”…by “living with it”

The Couture Collection becomes LIVABLE. We get to enjoy and embrace that custom in the everyday

With our coffee. With all that life throws at us. With the ups. With the downs.

Life really is better in “pretty” or “fabulous”. It just is.

And the cool thing about Custom? What is “pretty” to me is different than what is “pretty” to you!

THAT is the point! It’s CUSTOM 🙂

As people, we are couture. We are layered with different experiences and headed towards different places. If we weren’t…nothing would get done! I’d be sitting with an idea of a gown with no computer…no coffee…no shoes…and certainly no house!

What’s the Custom inside of you…?

So here’s to Style Points. Ball Gowns and Tuxedos, Vans & Hoodies, Custom Intentional Design in all it’s glory.

So someday I will confess to a Vans Addiction…but you didn’t hear it from me today…;)

Pinterest link HERE. Check it out!

Live a custom life. There is only one you.

And let me know what you are wearing today! At least we aren’t in our bathrobes with fuzzy slippers….well…ok…the Peninsula Hotel ones from B Hills r pretty fab & could be considered nice enough for office wear 😉

The Robes from The Peninsula Hotel in B Hills – soooo soft!

Wednesday Style Points: Learning & Teaching About Interior Design & Decorating

Wednesday Style Points: Learning & Teaching About Interior Design & Decorating

I have never been accused of being quiet

Well sometimes I have…

But not about Design & Decorating

Today we are sharing the day with our Video Guys & some very special attendees at our Seminar: My Catalog Life

West Elm…we take these resources and really break it down so you aren’t overwhelmed and know where to start…you have a plan…

It’s about making a home space from retail product – in practical but custom terms! It’s about creating your couture chateau’s from those stacks and stacks of catalogs & miles of inbox “unreads”!

This Seminar was born out of a talk I wrote…is that how you say it?…called “Help! I’m a Home Goods Addict” which was for a few good friends 😉

Are we ashamed to say we go here from time to time??….!

ARGHHHH!!! they said (in a good way)….so…the talk morphed into this Seminar!

Here is the link to the Pinterest Board we created for this Seminar

Pottery Barn via Apartment Therapy (picture linked)

It is now practical, always (!) and includes checks & balances to make sure you are making a space your own and not a “Catalog Ad”

I’d love to expand this topic – but for now it’s a single day and we will do our best to get some video edits done by November so our remote Couture Chateau Friends can download one of the segments for free! There will be 5 segments – possibly 6 if we run on!!

Seminar is sold out – we only had room for 8, but will be videoing so we can edit for practical downloads

Sneak Peek of nuggets:

Easy Ways to Coordinate Compatible Retail Product

1. Catalog Scale – who has furniture frames that work together (?!)

2. Catalog Colors – who partners with which paint suppliers for their finishes (?!)

3. Catalog Fabrics – where do those fabrics really come from and how can I coordinate if I want to buy from another company (?!) and why do I see the same fabrics in a lot of the catalogs? Is it actually the same or printed differently

Wednesday Interior Design Style Points: Yom Kippur a Day Set Apart

Wednesday Interior Design Style Points: Yom Kippur a Day Set Apart

Though I am not Jewish, today is a Holy Day for many of my friends. It is set apart.

As a Designer and Decorator, I have been humbled and learned much from my Jewish friends and colleagues who take great care and understand the value and import of each component that goes into intentional purposeful design.

One of my biggest learning experiences was when I designed a Kosher Kitchen decades ago. I can now see it as the genesis of my love of custom detail.

Why?

I had to measure and design individual spaces or compartments that were lined with cloth for every single item.

Every cabinet was measured for what item would be placed in it and made to size. Every cabinet was then custom lined with an appropriate cloth.

It made me realize that even the smallest items had value and import and deserved to be stewarded and have a place.

Each PIECE had a PURPOSE and was VALUED. Nothing superfluous went into that space. Everything mattered, was measured, had a specific place and was accounted for.

Embrace your custom value and purpose today :). You matter and are accounted for!

What Interior Design Choices can you make that will enhance your life? Make you more of who you are supposed to be?

I love this lamp – it is made of what some people think of as throw away or ridiculous material…but in the hands of the right designer becomes something fabulous and beautiful! Great symbolism for never overlooking the details. From Demilked. Swoon.

Live a custom life. There is only one you!

Farm Tables: I LOVE Farm Tables with Attitude

Painted Farm Table: French. I have two of these in my own home. Love them.

Another Side View. At 85″ Long and just the right height, a farm table works for dining, studying, a buffet, office desk…just about anything! Including standing on when you need a dress hemmed!! 😉

Why do I love this style? Because even if budget doesn’t allow for the Vintage French Version Above…you can EASILY Build one! (or have your carpenter build one)

Seriously….4 Gorgeous Legs….Some Pine….and Voila!

One of my FAVORITE sites is Custom Made

We OFTEN build a simple custom table that is JUST RIGHT for our client…

We have a Custom Draw Leaf Table in our Office…
