Yesterday I showcased something light and fun, simple vignettes I am being moved by right now, TODAY

Today I want to spotlight details.

Details from the world of Couture. Swoon. Oh, that I could wear dresses like this to work!

Can you imagine? Hauled off to some island I would be….;)

That said,

You know I love these dressmaker details

Elie Saab Spring 2013. I love this look. When I see gowns like this on the runway I am always thinking about how to take details and translate them into home

I love translating moments from couture into furnishings & fixtures…

I love these ice blue lamps. Contemporary take on a classic color. This is a translated detail for me when I look at the dress from the runway above. Image linked. Its the TRANSLUCENT.

What is a detail you find yourself going back to over and over?

The translucent from the Couture Gown above is one I repeat over and over in design

Lucite, glass, sheer fabric overlays…

So you have a Decorating Principle in front of you

Seems logical

Let’s start with # 1:

Decorate with no more than 7 years in mind

I mean, Decorate for 7 years…good idea

Now what?!

Safety + Order + Beauty™

(Yes, another one of my Trademarked Processes)

I mean, how do I make this practical?

Three things, in this order:

1. Safety

2. Order

3. Beauty

It’s the SPOTLIGHT we put on every PRINCIPLE when working with Full Service Clients in that order

 #1 = Safety

Addressing safety, especially emotional & spiritual safety in decorating provides hedges. Pleasant boundaries that make a house a HOME. They can be many things to many people. The point is, if we address them, we can manage them & decorate a space to deal with them…

Therefore, we address every component of SAFETY in their life with respect to the PRINCIPLE at hand

Example: For the next 7 years….what do I need to do to be safe

Physically + Emotionally + Spiritually

What does YOUR safety look like in each of those areas?

Setting up residence overseas? Happen to be a diplomat? Physical safety is a component of our Design. Spiritual as well – there may be things we need to be cognizant of if someone is in and around volatile religious situations

Young kids? Infants? Safety can be about latches, locks & electrical outlets AND buttons on tufted sofas…..

Safety is simply not something we should overlook!

Troubled child moving home? Safety can mean no bar in the guest house & a video camera at the end of the property. It can also mean simple clean and calming interior spaces that are designed to heal…the right colors, textures…

I love this space by Mary McDonald. But I probably wouldn’t translate this boldness into a space for someone who is struggling…and those are conversations best had at the outset of a Decorating job. Trust me. You’d be surprised at how much we can fool ourselves into thinking…”oh, that would be fine…my son is coming back from rehab, but I don’t think it matters what the front room looks like…” Ummm, yes, it does!

Safety can mean many things – and you’d be surprised how many detials get overlooked when you don’t address these things

Remember, I created these Decorating Principles to equip me to best serve my Clients

With years of working alongside many different types of Clients in many different situations, I noticed that the Diplomat & Stay At Home Suburban Mother had more in common when it came to the PROCESS of finding the right Decor than first glance

Universal + Customizable

The process we use is the same for both = Universal

The outcome or answers are different = Custom

I love sharing these – my hope is that they will bless you!

Couture Chateau Decorating Principle # 5: Personal issues must be addressed for Decorating to Delight

On Sunday of this week, I started sharing my Couture Chateau Decorating Principles

Normally these are reserved for our Full Service Clients

However, in the spirit of being FEARLESS for 2013:

1) I am sharing nugget versions on the blog

2) I am putting together an affordable downloadable e-product as well

Universally Applicable + Uniquely Customizable

I created processes + binders, surveys & systems which are extensive

Nuggets = Digestible

Remember the Principles we’ve shared so far:

 #1. Decorate with no more than 7 years in mind

#2. Remove any item that is emotionally unsafe

#3. Fiercely protect the heart of your home

#4. For Decorating to inspire it has to be authentically you

I share my next Decorating Principle carefully

Personal issues are tough

We feel stupid when they are exposed

Boiled it down but still included 3 of my parameters (there are 12)

Parameter #1) personal issues DO NOT need to be resolved, but they MUST BE addressed

 

Parameter # 2) personal issues CAN get messy, but messy is ok

Example: Client is “Destination House C” owned by a Multi Generational Extended Family Trust

Many cooks in the kitchen

Parameter # 3) Messy ONLY equals dis-function if we pretend we aren’t

Enter Decorator & Decision Time

A property could be vast & exquisite….

Or it could be an Alpine retreat someone bought decades ago for adventure. It matters not. The issues we deal with are the same.

Trustee M: “The Decorator is moving the Miro into the 2nd Floor Lakeside Suite”

The Melancholic Singer by Joan Miro #1480. 

Trustee F: “Don’t you stay in the 2nd Floor Lakeside Suite?”

Trustee M: “Not always”

Alexa Hampton

Trustee F: “Yes you do, you can’t have the Miro, I want it to stay in my room”

Trustee M: “We don’t have rooms. The house is owned by the Trust.”

Trustee F: “Then I want to stay in the 2nd Floor Lakeside Suite”

Trustee M: “I thought you stayed on the 1st Floor because the morning light bothered you on the 2nd Floor”

Does the painting get moved?

How is the issue resolved?

Does it matter?

Sound ridiculous?

Have you ever heard someone describe a family that disintegrated over something seemingly small?

Me too

Personal issues. Everyone has them….

I don’t want to decorate where a family can disintegrate over something small

Addressing the personal issues AHEAD of time can prevent that

What we find out in the Decorating Principle Process:

Grandmother bought the painting when it was inexpensive, as a child, with her father because she liked the patterns

Grandmother cannot travel any longer to “Destination House C”

Her ONLY wish for the Decorator is to move the painting into the Lakeside Suite on the 2nd Floor because the colors & patterns reflect beautifully when the sun streams in. It reminds her of when the painting was in her room as a child, when it was inexpensive & she just liked the patterns & shapes…

AND

For the Decorator to have a beautiful photograph taken of that vignette to hang in her current home

Do you know this?

Or are you still mad about not having the Miro in “your suite”

Or are you still ticked at Trustee F for derailing an efficient business meeting? I mean ruuheally…can’t she get a life?

Decorating Principles Processes? = you BOTH know it and are at peace with it.

You know WHY the painting is being moved.

Personal Issues. Everyone has them….

Enter Delight

We moved the painting to Delight someone

If we are hung up on personal issues, we CAN’T delight for Grandmother

If we are hung up on personal issues we don’t WANT anyone else to delight

Trustee F will PERCIEVE Trustee M is trying to control things

(Trustee M is the Trust Director & runs a successful business)

Trustee M will PERCIEVE Trustee F is indecisive and jealous

(Trustee F is an Artist who is deeply fond of Miro)

Addressing personal issues makes room for grace which leads to ability to delight

The point is, personal issues can be anything

Dogs, Paintings, Colors…Patterns…Memories…even Moods & Goals…

Think about it – what are some of yours?

Since we are only working in 7 year increments, they aren’t forever….

We are all messy. Trust Funds or Trailers. All.

Messy does NOT have to equal dis-function. Messy can be cleaned up.

It’s why I developed these Principles. They help us navigate & clean up.

I have always had a passion for creating custom spaces + places that move people forward in their journey

It’s this weird thing when you “see” someone and immediately think…

“They need a Blue Bedroom”

I love this Library. Some people are fed by the private, some are fed by the public…finding out who we are so we can live as we should is a life long process…but we have to start somewhere…this photo is from a home in Charleston. Image Linked.

“An open concept kitchen isn’t really where they need to start…they should start by getting their formal entertaining spaces done…”

“I know they want a new kitchen, but they need to get their private spaces in order first”

I guess in the end, it’s why I do what I do

Why I am so passionate about this whole thing

Truth is we all need something slightly different in our designed spaces + custom lives

And that’s Beautiful

It’s a beautiful place to really see someone and help them create a space that makes them come alive

But lots of things can get in the way

Have you ever felt like something was holding you back from really getting the LIFE you were living in right?

Money?  Tradition?

Time?  Fear?

Effort?  Access?

All of those things CAN matter, but they aren’t really barriers in the end

Not if you are really conscious of living YOUR life

Truth is, I think the thing that keeps us from living in our Custom Lives

is the hard work of unapologetic self honesty

Self Honesty

We really have to know WHO we are and WHAT we are about in order to create an intentional life

Yes, a process to be sure

But the process has to start somewhere

Of COURSE it changes over time….

One of my favorite books…It’s not easy being a bunny…or a bear or a pig or a skunk…the point is we all have custom ways of living!

Honesty

It’s that moment when you go to the doctor & step on the scale

Argh

Honesty

It’s that moment when your spouse or best friend looks at you and sees something in you that you’ve been trying to hide

maybe a hurt, maybe a fear

but they SEE

and we are vulnerable

Honesty

What if I am rejected if I am self honest in my living?

Such a marvelous tale…resonates with all.

What if?

What if I design my life as I think my soul is telling me and someone goes “ewwww”?

What if?

What if I choose the red sofa I really love – I mean absolutely love – and someone says “gag”?

What if?

What if I put up that inexpensive wall paper that I think in my heart is really cool – but it doesn’t have a label and my neighbor who has “great taste” comes over and says “icck”

What if?

You are still YOU

And YOU have something intrinsically beautiful + unique to bring to this thing called life

And that neighbor, friend…person…isn’t called to live YOUR life! YOU are

So forget that thing that holds you back

If you don’t bring YOU, remember, someone somewhere is missing something…

And so as 2013 unfolds for each of us – take a minute or several and really ponder IF there is anything holding you back from really living. Maybe nothing, maybe you are LIVING. Sweet. THAT warms my soul.

Let’s make 2013 a year we REALLY live as our custom selves

Thanksgiving upon us

Wish I could “bend & snap” my Table + Home Decor into existence

But even with helpers…no avail…

Why I like SIMPLE + PRACTICAL counsel = real STYLE

Here are my Top 2 Simple Tips to achieve Grand Thanksgiving Style

1. Go with multiples. LOTS of multiples.

Curious Country Creations. Martha viewers already know. What I am saying is that Grand doesn’t have to be Ormolu…tho I do have a place in my heart for that ;)…

One of my clients this season is using wheat stalks. Tied, varying heights + locations. Placed in tole cachepots which have pride of place all year long, the multiple component is what makes it look grand.

Another simple multiple = white pumpkins

I know, you’ve seen it done. THE POINT = groupings by color + type work! Even an old collection of tacky pilgrims can be staged well on a table if they are all spray painted ivory & stripped of their cheesy clothing! Grand is a visual read. 2. 21″ Wide Geo Mesh

Seriously fabulous stuff

It’s miracle cream for the home decor business

The visual is a simple pencil skirt + top in a matching color with statement necklace.

Ribbon = outfit

I love this time of year

The air is clean

Gatlinburg Color Changing

Sweaters come out of hiding & the Decorator in me gets to dress with layers

ahhhhh

Problem is Clients, Friends, Family…(ok, I) tend to have mini panic attacks

The Couture (custom) Chateau (your, my home) is done, but the holidays loom

What to stage with

Which holiday to decorate for

Disclaimer = I am allowed to say “Learned Response” due to the following:

A) 200 rotting pumpkins looked SO good when they lined the driveway weeks ago (year withheld)

B) I bought ALL of (insert ANY holiday item) to make my Custom Vignette ala the windows at Saks

Now it looks like a graveyard of cheap (insert ANY holiday item). I’m embarrassed. Can I take (insert ANY holiday item) to the dump so no one will see me?! (recurring)

and my fav C) “honey, I need 1,500 lineal feet of fresh lighted garland for the fence”

My husband? BLANK STARE

so I only used 500 that year…(recurring)

and so I spotlight my

“Top 3 Designer LEARNED RESPONSES” for my Friends (you)…ok (me)

1. Pick Seasonal Colors that will work for at least 2 or 3 Holidays

This is similar in base color to the ones we use

My sisters will attest I have feather wreaths with EVERY color mixed in. They are out and re-purposed from October – December

USES: Charger for Vases with fresh seasonal flowers; Centerpieces; Wreaths on Doors; Hanging on Chair Backs with ribbon; Overscaled Ornaments on Trees = all from 1 Blasted Custom Colored Feather Wreath Prototype

DESIGNER TIP: Budget & fabricate CUSTOM standbys that can do quad-duty and work in conjunction with your year round decor

I don’t have photo access to the vases we used, but this is similar at 10″ high. The shaping is conducive to flowers & candles while still being wide enough to get a hand in for candy.

Client Example: We purchased 25 red 12″ Tall Vases and customized them. They have lined steps with candles; served as centerpieces with flowers; been en masse @ over 5 friends homes for parties; served as bowls for candy & work Thanksgiving – Valentines Day. Your custom modified standby doesn’t have to work Halloween – New Years Eve, just think in terms of multi-use. Pick a shape or type that you gravitate to. Wreaths, Vases, Baskets…

Designer Confession: So I have 40 of those wreaths in different sizes, but stilllll….they rotate…..(!)…..

2. Do 1 schematic WELL rather than 4 POORLY

We’ve all seen it…the ‘craft’ that looks like ‘c–p’ (forgive the language, but pluheassse)

If you can only do one thing, do it right and do it REAL

DESIGNER TIP: One gorgeous pumpkin, uncarved, on a clean porch is WAY better than a poorly done “story”

Client Example: Many Clients travel during the holidays. ORDER and have delivered the best real pumpkins you can source. SMALL Odd number groupings (1-3 people!) un-carved are good for Gates & Porches. They are appropriate through December 1 when a Gardner or Neighbor can easily handle if still out of town.

Designer Confession: How do I know? Reference = 200 rotting pumpkins lining a long driveway & a smelly dump run in heels of course 😉

3. DON’T Custom Decorate the entire house. You are not a department store. Really, you’re not…even if your home is over 11,000 square feet. Not EVERYTHING needs to be swagged.

As Tobi Fairley says “your eyes need a place to rest”

The holiday season is in overload and your home should be a respite, not a rev-up

Leave ROOM for the PEOPLE in your life to set their drinks or books down

DESIGNER TIP: Don’t use real garland inSIDE your remodeled house. It gets sap everywhere & drops more than teenage boys. Let’s just call this Epic Fail # 113

Client Example: Have custom faux garland fabricated with proper LABELED storage boxes. DO IT out of season for your specific home. Make it bare enough that you or a local florist can easily accessorize. Have holes & clips fabricated IN so fresh greenery appears naturally sporadically placed.

Designer Confession: Refer to Epic Fail # 113: My Fresh Garland in & on every surface Broken Vaccum Cleaner Sap on Untreated Limestone Year

The joy in all of this?

We create ROOM for the PEOPLE in our life to set their conversations in the air

and that is the most beautiful holiday decoration we can have

Thursday Spotlight: How to customize your design spaces with retail product – some take away nuggets when shopping catalogs but going for a high end look

Yesterday we had a fabulous Design Seminar entitled: My Catalog Life. This was one of those things (the Seminar) that morphed out of many conversations, lots of laughter and a talk about being a closet Home Goods Addict among a group of seriously fashionable women. Many of whom would ‘NAAAVA’ admit they actually go…well, outside of the studio that is ;)!

We will ATTEMPT to edit the video and get it COMPLETED by END of November. We will definitely need to consolidate some of the materials into a downloadable format and may have to re-film some of the segments where laughter drowned out logic…!…

At the wrap up yesterday, someone suggested an e-book or work book in addition to the take-a-way binders that were part of the Seminar. I like that idea! Time to get to work Ann :)!!…and team….!…

Some of the bite size nuggets:

1) WHEN you design from catalogs, setting the color palate FIRST creates a natural envelope which makes editing furniture options EASIER. The big catalog and online retailers have already done the hard “color work” for you. Take advantage of it and don’t reinvent the wheel. Save your customization of color for the accents – but make the broad color choices for walls, ceilings & floors FIRST. Get them painted and be done. This is in contrast to how we typically approach a highly custom project where a paint color may need to coordinate with an antique rug coming from Turkey or a custom fabric from India.

Many of the big retailers have paint collections or partnerships with large paint companies like Benjamin Moore…don’t reinvent the wheel IF you are customizing your spaces from catalogs

I am ok with that. Designer Permission = Granted!

2) EDIT your retailer/catalog choices for the major pieces of furniture to no more than 4 for a single space. Be brutal. Match overall scale of furniture arms, seat heights & accent tables to within 10%-15%. You can play with accent pieces, but get the Foundation Seating pieces right and the layering will come more easily.

If you are customizing from catalogs – only use the most trusted and reliable retailers for your big pieces. Stick to 4 catalogs max when combining those foundation pieces. Any more and your room will look cluttered with too many disparate details

I am ok with that too! Designer Permission = Granted! (hint…we follow this percentage rule on custom jobs as well;)

3) MIXING is an art. We shared tools for practicing with Retail product – @Olioboard – @Pinterest – and encouraged TIME DEADLINES for “playing design” and EXECUTION START DATES for “actual project design”….meaning you don’t get to design the room on a piece of paper, pin it to the room’s door and wait for 5 years! Get off the stump, get started, plan, finish and get on with the custom living :)!!

Mixing is an art. Take cues from great retail displays. Note scale and texture mixes – subtle matches that “speak to each other” but don’t scream

I am WAY ok with that. Designer Permission = Granted!

Those are some of the bite size pieces from a fabulous day.
